Kuʻikahi Village Moves Closer to Approval: A Promising Step for Maui’s Workforce Housing
Exciting progress is being made on the much-anticipated Kuʻikahi Village project in Wailuku, which took a major step forward with a unanimous recommendation from the Maui County Council’s Affordable Housing Committee. The proposed 100% workforce housing neighborhood would offer 202 homes across a diverse range of housing types—from tiny homes to live-work townhomes—making it one of the most inclusive developments of its kind on Maui.
With prices starting as low as $236,180 for tiny homes and going up to $754,400 for four-bedroom single-family residences, the project is designed to meet the needs of Maui’s low, below-moderate, moderate, and above-moderate income residents. It will be owner-occupied only, with no vacation rentals allowed, and will include five mini parks, walking paths, playgrounds, shade trees, and a 40-foot buffer along Kuʻikahi Drive.
As Council Member Shane Sinenci noted, “I personally have never seen a project with so many different varieties within it.” Council Chair Alice Lee added, “This is innovative, and hopefully other developers will follow suit.”
The project, developed by Alaula Builders, is still awaiting full council approval by October 14—but its thoughtful design and strong local support are clear signs of momentum.
