Wailea
Honua’ula (formerly Wailea 670): Update!
Well, this has been in the works for a LONG time. 670 acres, lots of archeological and agricultural sites spells delays and oppositions on Maui! Started in 1999 and since then it has been mired with challenges. Zoning finally got approved in 2008. In October of 2012, the Sierra Club filed a lawsuit against the project and everybody involved basically ( including the mayor!). Since last I heard, they are nearing a settlement with the Sierra Club. So there appears to be light at the end of the tunnel.
The interesting news is that Honua’ula will have about 130 acres preserved for archaeological and agricultural interests. It may be one of largest preservation areas of its kind in the state. So it will be good news as it will be in perpetuity. The original agricultural terraces had been planted with sweet potatoes and potatoes. They were grown in the 1800’s and then carted off to Makena Landing (the main harbor in 1800’s) to get shipped to California for its gold rush.
Honua’ula is projected to have 1150 units. 40% of it single family housing and 60% multi-family. Private wastewater system. Greenways with short course golf (down from the original full course golf). The developers are hopeful, so let us know if you have interest and we will give you updates.
If you want to read my past article on Wailea Developments (it will give you more detailed info on individual projects) you can read it here.

Wailea Residential Inn: Newest hotel in Wailea. Currently under construction. Located along Wailea Ike Drive. The development is a 200-room, 4-story Residence Inn by Marriott. Other developments are in the pipeline. There is no word how far out they are, so you can read about it from my past article on the “The Future of Wailea”. Once I hear of an update, I will write again.
So you might ask “what’s left in Wailea?” There is still some land left in Wailea (not too much). About 122 Acres left. See map below.
